Year 7 Rugby - Poetry in motion!

The Year 7 Rugby team played Stanwell Comprehensive School on the 26th November in the third round of league fixtures. With a number of pupils playing only their first or second game of rugby for the school, it was an excellent opportunity to show their skills and the things they had learnt since the start of the year.

Cowbridge started extremely well, with the forward pack providing outstanding service for scrum half Rhys Pritchard. With this quick ball, Cowbridge were passing the ball around like poetry in motion, illustrating excellent skills for such a young group of players. For the first try, about 7 pairs of hands touched the ball across the line before Rhys Hardman sprinted up the wing and touched the ball down over the white wash.A safe conversion was made by Harry Treharne to secure the extras.

Cowbridge continued this pressure straight after the restart, with Ruben Davies and Paddy Kennedy proving to be a formidable force in the centre and causing all sorts of problems for the defence. Before too long, Cowbridge had added another 14 points to their tally, courtesy of two strong runs from Ruben Davies and Will Stancombe, and the conversations expertly executed by again Harry Treharne.

Stanwell were producing some excellent moves and phases of play themselves, but hard-hitting tackles from Akka Guwy, Robbie Brown and Aaron Holcombe were keeping them at bay. Before the end of the half Ruben Davies increased his tally to three (hat-trick hero!) and Paddy Kennedy went over for an excellent try himself, with a few dummies which Barry John would have been delighted with.

The first half ended and the score was 36 – 0 to Cowbridge.

The game proved to be a tale of two halves, with Cowbridge taking their foot off the throttle after the break and Stanwell putting theirs flat to the floor.Other teams would have dwindled away, but to their credit Stanwell fought back.

The home sides defence had solidified and Cowbridge were finding it difficult to fully penetrate their line.Stanwell on the other hand were finding gaps in the Cowbridge defence that had been slammed shut in the first half, but were now opening through continued pressure.Stanwell put up a valiant effort in the half second, but unfortunately could not pull the score back enough.

The game finished 36 – 15 to Cowbridge, with Stanwell getting three consolation tries before the final whistle.

Well done Year 7, the first half performance was as good as I have seen from a Year 7 rugby team.We need to ensure we perform for the full 50mins, but that will come with experience.Keep up the hard work in training, and more wins will come, I am sure of it.Well done again!
