Year 9 Rugby Champions of Wales

Cowbridge held off a fierce Ysgol Y Cymer comeback to win a thrilling Welsh Cup final at Principality Stadium.

Cowbridge one of the favorites for the trophy after victories over Maesteg, Colwyn Bay, Whithchurch and Brynteg headed to the Principality stadium on Tuesday 3rd May in a quietly confident mood ahead of the big game.

Cowbridge came out at pace from the first whistle, with some ferocious defence which set the tone for the rest of the game. The front five of Tuckwell,Veness,Thomas, Wong and Williams tackled relentlessly for large periods of the first half allowing the energetic back row forwards Galton, Williams and Pritchard to make probing breaks in to the opposition defence.

Cowbridge dominaed territory and possession in early exchanges but were unable to capitalise on the pressure. Centres Naylor and Stancombe made huge inroads in the Cymer defensive line and wings Oddy and Thomas looked dangerous when they were given space.

Then it came, a wonderful team move of magic hands and sweet timing - Benji Williams finding space down the right, and sprinting over the line.

A perfect kick from Ioan Cooper added the conversion for 7-0.

The second try, a moment of brilliance from fly half Jamie Howells, using his deft right foot to lift the ball over the defence allowing skipper Galton to gallop over from 40 metres. Again Cooper slotted the kick, making it 14-0 at half time.

At this stage Cowbridge looked like they were running away with the game but a stirring half time team talk meant a second half comeback from Ysgol Y Cymer.

The boys from the Rhondda sensed a chance and scored two succesive tries. With the second conversion sailing over, 12 unanswered points had come in 11 minutes, and a thrilling contest was wide open once again.

After a few nervous exchanges Cowbridge cleared the ball long down field which was fumbled by the Cymer back three. The resulting scrum allowed wing Jake Thomas to power his way over the line after a well orchestrated back row move down the blind-side.

Despite a few nervous final seconds from the resulting kick off, scrum half Will O'Connor cleared the ball off the field allowing the celebrations to begin. Final score Cowbridge 19 - Ysgol Y Cymer 12.
