“It is a great pleasure to introduce this digital brochure intended to provide a brief insight into the life and work of Cowbridge Comprehensive School.

We have high aspirations for our students and want them to be challenged and inspired to flourish in all they do. Our strategy is to maintain and further develop our reputation as a high performing school within Wales and beyond.”

Mrs Thomas, Headteacher

Our Story

Past, present, future

We are a popular and very successful, oversubscribed, co-educational secondary school situated in the market town of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.  The school is able to trace its roots back to 1608 and we are proud of our history and reputation for excellence.

Our long tradition of academic excellence places us as one of the highest performing schools in Wales. As a result we will talk to you about children, our story and the next steps in our journey; we talk and care about children not statistics.  The redevelopment of the school and its site was completed in 2010 and provides our students with a truly 21st Century learning environment where each young person is challenged, nurtured and supported to reach his/her full potential.  The school serves a large rural area with 10 established feeder primary schools, from which the majority of students at the school have transferred. We also have a significant number of young people joining us from a wide number of additional schools as a result of parental choice.

Celebrating first class facilities and resources

Our facilities are state of the art. However, we dream big and then bigger again. Our ongoing capital development programme means that our facilities and resources will remain amongst the very best in Wales.

Nurturing the Individual

Celebrating the diversity of our students’ talents

We are distinguished by our students and we put students first. Our students are engaging, sincere, compassionate and have high expectations of themselves. We therefore place great importance in investing in our staff training and recruitment to ensure that they are passionate about learning and continually strive to look for innovative ways of helping young people to learn better and more effectively.

We therefore strive to continue to be a school where we are the first choice for families and their children, not just for academic success but because we genuinely care about every child.

We believe that our school is a centre of excellence because lessons are exciting and the curriculum meets the needs of all. Students choosing to join us excel and we continually strive to develop further excellence at all levels. We are aware that happy students are successful students and we are fully committed to the well-being of all.  Staff work effectively together, for the ultimate benefit of every individual student, to create a friendly, happy, supportive and caring environment.

Excellent behaviour, appearance and hard work are standards that are carefully maintained.

Harnessing Creativity, Courage and Resilience

The Creative Arts flourish at Cowbridge Comprehensive School. Design technology work and artwork displayed around the school leaves onlookers in awe! As vibrant centres of excellence, students reach unforeseen potential. A large number of musical groups and ensembles rehearse each morning of the week.

Our talented students give stunning performances and productions which are widely recognised and appreciated.

Opportunities for Learning Beyond the Classroom

We believe that we are more than just a school; we provide a venue where a broad range of enrichment activities, community activities and educational visits enable young people to gain experiences that may otherwise be inaccessible to them.

Our exceptional ranges of activities beyond the classroom are central to school life; each year boasts a great repertoire of musical and drama performances, visits and activities aimed at developing well-rounded, resilient young people.

Health and Well-being

Working in Partnership with Parents

Each stage of secondary education brings its own challenges. Form tutors, Leaders of Achievement and Support Staff specialise in specific year groups to help students to embrace change and the next phase of learning.

Staff play a pivotal role in monitoring and tracking individual student progress across the curriculum and for targeting support, advice and guidance on a day to day basis. We believe in open, transparent and swift communication and intervention and understand that parents are our key partners in ensuring a joint approach to learning in its widest sense.

Valuing Local and Global Connections

Our young people demonstrate high quality relationships with our wider community and as a result are upheld as ambassadors and positive role models for others in our community and beyond. Much of our community work is developed beyond the classroom walls. It is found in the dozens of activities and enthusiastic pupil-led committeesof the school.

Sporting Excellence for All

Our proud tradition of sporting excellence means that our sporting stars regularly achieve regional, national and international honours at an enviable range of sports. We are extremely proud of our sporting record and achievements. Many internationally famous sportsmen and sportswomen attended Cowbridge Comprehensive School.

We promote sport and fitness for all, offering a wide range of activities including an extensive 5X60 programme with the aim of developing a lifelong appetite for outdoor and indoor fitness.

The school boasts exceptional and unrivalled sports facilities, which, combined with our many links to external clubs and organisations, places us as one of the best schools in Wales for endeavour and achievement in sports.
