Basketball Report: Year 7 Girls beat St Cyres

In their final game of the season the Cowbridge Year 7 Girls faced off on their home court against St Cyres.

After a few narrow losses (including losing by 1 point in a heartbreaker to Stanwell) the Cowbridge Year 7 Girls were aiming to end the season on a high. “We know we’ve got big shoes to fill, our Year 8 girls are big time champs” said guard Kate Floyd, “but we’re up for the challenge, we train every opportunity we can!”

Playing centre for Cowbridge Connie Wood got the girls going the right way from the tip, sending the ball straight to a teammate for a quick lay-up. Connie followed this up playing every minute of the game patrolling the paint on both ends, grabbing every rebound in sight. “We’ve learnt this year that if you’re going to win you gotta play tough!” said Wood, “The girls rely on me secure the boards so I give it my all.”

Disaster struck for Cowbridge midway through the second quarter as Kate Floyd reinjured her hand and had to leave the game with a possible broken finger. “When we lost K-Flo I knew I’d better get going, and quick!” said fellow guard Maddie Rooney. Wasting no time at all Rooney unleashed her silky smooth jump shot, banging in shot after shot. Point guard Phoebe Lee responded perfectly to her teammate’s hot streak, “When Madz gets going like that I know my job is to get her the ball in her spots and let her go to work” said Lee. Showing her diversity Lee complimented Rooney perfectly, getting open, cutting to the baseline and knocking down a jumper of her own. Forward Nicole Yip rounded out the starting line-up driving inside repeatedly with her trademark strength. “I’ve learned from the best, watching and studying big Jess-G from Year 8 and knew this would be my time to shine” Yip reflected. Off the bench the Cowbridge girls were ably supported by Lowenna ‘Lowie’ Radcliffe and Kiera Canter, both making big contributions at both ends of the floor.

St Cyres played well, giving it their all every minute of the game but the massive effort and commitment the Cowbridge girls had put into their training was now paying off. The Cowbridge girls held a strong lead the entire game and eventually won 20-4. Top scorer Maddie Rooney was her usual effervescent self after the final white blew, “Yes, a win!” exclaimed Rooney, “All the hard work is paying off, and I am loving it, bring on next season!”
