Ben Higson – Kayak

Last weekend Ben Higson (Year 8, Cowbridge Comprehensive School) competed in the international Hurley Classic event held on a weir on the river Thames. This is one of the biggest and longest running kayak freestyle competitions in the world and drew paddlers from across a number of other countries including two of the four current world champions (senior men and junior ladies). Alongside two other Cadets from his club, Ben competed in both the team freestyle on the Saturday evening (with heavy snow falling) and in the main event on the Sunday (in sub-zero temperatures). Freestyle is scored on completing set moves, with boat angle and degree of rotation and difficulties all taken into account. The cold made it more challenging, but that did not stop Ben from really focussing on putting in a good performance. As a result of all his dedication and training, Ben did really well to come away with first place in the Cadet category (15 and under). Going through the results list, he was the sixth placed overall Junior (18 and under). Attached are photographs of Ben on the water, one with his trophy and one of the team briefing where you can see how small his team of three is compared to the other competitors such as the RAF team to their right. Well done Ben!
